"Sparked-away" is an instrument built for the dyptique sound installation "Autonomics".

"Autonomics" is an autonomous sound installation, it unfolds in two separate but connected spaces. Let’s call them Space (A) and Space (A’).

In space (A), fragmented finds are sculpted to become performative sonic automata. The spectator first enters space (A’), and finds themselves in the midst of an immersive sound composition, composed with the sounds produced by the automata in space (A). The spectator is left to experience the evolving composition fully within the realm of their own imagination and interpretation. When they access space (A), they meet the automata as a source of what they just heard, offering them a radically different sonic, aesthetic and perceptive experience.

"Sparked-away" (french Pulsétincelle) was built over two residency periods of 10 days each, in collaboration with hardware and software engineer Bart Plum aka Mr. Stock. The first residency period took place at the Arab Digital Expression Foundation (ADEF) in Cairo in spring 2023, and was followed by a residency at La Fonderie in Le Mans in summer 2023. In ADEF, we built proof of concepts for two different instruments. In La Fonderie, we developed one of them into a resonating electro-gravitational percussion, with materials found and sculpted at La Fonderie. We hammered copper and pierced brass, worked with steel and aluminium, and looked for a resonating percussive metal sound. We modulated the instrument's movement electronically through voltage variations. We thoroughly studied the question of portability, making it very easy to pack and transport inside its own base. Research on the transformations the sounds in (A) undergo to create the sonic experience in (A’) was conducted. An experiment on this sound transformation with the newly built instrument was mounted in a double-space set-up in La Fonderie.
